Search for the size of the EDC market and you get answers that differ by a factor of two, sometimes ten. This post lays out what the main analyst firms publish, why they disagree, and how a buyer, a founder or a student should use the numbers.

The short version
Definition
Electronic data capture systems collect clinical trial data from sites and participants into a validated database, replacing paper case report forms. If you want the product-side explanation, our EDC overview and the glossary entry on case report forms cover it. A market report puts a revenue figure on the vendors who sell those systems.
The wrinkle is that the boundary is soft. Modern platforms bundle EDC with randomization, eConsent, ePRO and monitoring, so an analyst has to decide what to count. Some reports break the market into components, deployment models and end users. The Mordor Intelligence summary, for example, reports that software led with a 60.12% revenue share in 2025 and that North America accounted for 48.10%. Those splits show how the report is organised, not how a particular sponsor should buy.
The numbers
Read from search results on 16 October 2026. Publisher pages were not reachable from our environment, so confirm each number at its source before quoting it.
| Publisher | Starting value | Forecast value | Growth rate reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mordor Intelligence | USD 2.08 billion in 2026 | USD 3.64 billion by 2031 | 11.86% CAGR, 2026 to 2031 |
| Fortune Business Insights | USD 2.07 billion in 2026 | USD 5.73 billion by 2034 | about 13.6% implied |
| IMARC Group | USD 1.4 billion in 2024 | USD 3.3 billion by 2033 | 9.7% CAGR, 2025 to 2033 |
| Credence Research | USD 2.27 billion in 2024 | USD 5.49 billion by 2032 | not captured |
| Precedence Research | about USD 1.70 billion in 2024 | about USD 5.30 billion by 2033 | 13.45% CAGR, 2024 to 2033 |
| Grand View Research | USD 1.25 billion in 2022 | USD 3.63 billion by 2030 | 14.6% CAGR (older report) |
Fortune Business Insights' growth rate is implied by the two values reported in a search summary. We did not read each report's definition of the market.
Why they differ
Compare the 2024 rows above. IMARC puts the 2024 market at USD 1.4 billion, while Credence Research puts it at USD 2.27 billion, about 60% higher for the same year. They are not measuring different realities. They are measuring different definitions with different methods.
Does the figure include only licences and subscriptions, or implementation, hosting and support as well? Does it include adjacent products that vendors now bundle? Analysts rarely agree, and a report that includes services will look larger than one that does not. Our rule is simple: if the report does not say what is counted, discount it.
A 2022 base with a 2030 horizon (as in an older Grand View Research report) cannot be compared with a 2026 base and a 2031 horizon. Even the same publisher revises its numbers when it refreshes a report. Compound growth rates are sensitive to the starting year, so a high CAGR from a low base can reach the same end value as a modest one from a higher base.
Most market reports combine vendor revenue disclosures, interviews and top-down estimates from clinical trial counts. The methodology sections are often behind a paywall. When you cannot see the method, you cannot judge the number, and the right response is to treat it as a rough order of magnitude.
While searching we also saw at least one listing with a 2026 value roughly ten times the others. That suggests a different scope, such as all clinical data management, or an error. We did not use it. When one number is ten times the rest, ask what it is counting before you ask whether it is right.
A market size does not tell you whether an EDC fits your study. The free sandbox does: every feature, no credit card, no time limit, and you pay only when you go live with real participants.
What drives growth
Where the reports agree is more useful than the sizes. The recurring themes are the shift from paper to electronic capture, growth in the number and complexity of trials, regulatory emphasis on trustworthy electronic records, adoption of remote elements, and growing interest in AI in clinical data work. None of this is controversial. What matters to a buyer is how each driver changes what you should ask a vendor.
FDA's October 2024 final questions-and-answers guidance on electronic systems, records and signatures and the revised ICH E6(R3) text both put weight on fitness for purpose and trustworthy records. For a buyer, that translates into questions about the audit trail, validation evidence and exports. Our buyer's guide for 2027 shows how to weight those criteria.
As more studies add remote consent and patient-reported data, EDC is no longer a stand-alone purchase. That is part of why market definitions drift. See state of decentralized clinical trials in 2026 for the regulatory and evidence picture.
Vendors increasingly lead with AI. The market reports tell you AI is a growth narrative, not whether a given feature is safe to use on trial data. For that, read AI agents in EDC: a 2026 reality check.
How to evaluate
Use these before you put a number in a slide, a business plan or a grant application.
Independent analyst, vendor-commissioned or a lead-generation page? Many market summaries exist to sell the full report.
Licences only, or services and hosting too? EDC only, or ePRO, eConsent, CTMS and randomization as well?
A 2026 value is a mid-year estimate by definition. Prefer reports that state the base year and the method.
Do not compare CAGRs with different windows. Convert to end values if you must compare.
Mordor reports North America at 48.10% of 2025 revenue. A European academic buyer is in a different market.
Triangulate with at least two independent publishers. If they differ by more than 30%, find out why.
Market size rarely changes which EDC fits a protocol. Use it for context, not for selection.
If you need a number for a business case, build a bottom-up estimate from trial counts and typical spend, and show the assumptions.
For buyers
A fast-growing market has two consequences for a buyer. There are more vendors, and more bundling. Both argue for evaluating on a fixed scorecard rather than on reputation. Start with our best EDC software for 2026 overview, use the EDC buyer scorecard template to fix your weights, and run the same task on every shortlisted system. If procurement needs a document, the clinical trial EDC RFP template is a starting point.
Capture is a self-serve, all-in-one clinical trial platform covering EDC, an eCRF builder, ePRO, eConsent, randomization and safety reporting in one system with one audit trail, for Phase 1 through Phase 3. We do not publish pricing figures in this post. You can check the platform page for what is included, and try everything in the free sandbox before you decide.
Published estimates we could see cluster around USD 2 billion for 2026: Mordor Intelligence lists USD 2.08 billion and Fortune Business Insights USD 2.07 billion. Other firms give different base years and definitions, so treat USD 2 billion as an order of magnitude, not a fact.
Reported compound annual growth rates range from about 9.7% (IMARC, 2025 to 2033) to 11.86% (Mordor, 2026 to 2031) and 13.45% to 14.6% in other reports. The spread comes from different windows and scopes.
They define the market differently (software only versus software plus services and adjacent systems), use different base years and forecast windows, and rely on undisclosed methods. For example, 2024 values of USD 1.4 billion (IMARC) and USD 2.27 billion (Credence Research) both appear.
Mordor Intelligence reports North America at 48.10% of 2025 revenue. Other reports also name North America as the largest region, but we did not check each one.
Rarely. Market reports tell you the category is growing, not which system fits your protocol, budget or compliance needs. Use a weighted scorecard and a sandbox trial instead.
Only after opening each publisher page, confirming the definition and base year and noting the date. We read the figures from search results, not from the full reports. Where possible, add a bottom-up estimate of your own.
It depends on the report. Some count only EDC software, others include adjacent clinical data systems. Check the scope section before comparing numbers.
