Science 37 alternatives: a trial-delivery network or trial software?

Science 37 is known for decentralized clinical trials, a Metasite model with telehealth investigators and a software platform. It is not mainly an EDC, so the right alternative depends on which part of the service you need. This page separates the services from the software.

What to know first

  • What public sources say: Science 37 was a decentralized clinical trial company with a Metasite model: a network of telehealth investigators and coordinators supported by a software platform. In January 2024 it agreed to be acquired by the telehealth and diagnostics company eMed in an all-cash deal reported at about $38 million. Its current service scope under eMed was not confirmed for this page.
  • What we do not claim: anything about current Science 37 services, pricing, staffing or availability. Ask eMed or the company directly.
  • The most important point: a Metasite-style model supplies people and clinical operations. An EDC supplies data capture. They are different purchases, and many sponsors need only one.
  • Capture is software only. It provides EDC, ePRO, eConsent and randomisation for your own investigators and sites. It does not supply investigators, telehealth, home nursing or recruitment.
  • If you need delivery services, the alternatives are other decentralized trial providers and CROs; if you need software, the alternatives are listed below.

What is publicly reported about Science 37

Science 37 listed on Nasdaq in 2021 through a merger and described itself as a provider of decentralized trials built around remote investigators and a technology platform. Its Metasite approach aimed to widen patient access beyond the geography of traditional sites. Trade press in January 2024 reported that revenue growth had stalled and that eMed would take the company private. A later entry on a public encyclopaedia reports the acquisition closing in early 2024; we did not check that against a primary source.

Because ownership has changed, do not assume that earlier descriptions of products, pricing or availability still apply. If a Science 37 relationship is on your shortlist, ask three plain questions: which services are available now, who delivers them, and what happens to the data system your study will use. Then compare that answer against the options below. The wider category is explained in the decentralized clinical trial guide, decentralized clinical trial software and virtual clinical trial platforms.

Decision path

Five steps to decide between services and software

  1. 1

    List what you cannot staff

Investigators in the right regions, coordinators, home or video visits. These need people, not software.

  2. 2

List what you can staff but not tool

If you have investigators and coordinators but no data system, you need an EDC, consent and ePRO, not a delivery network.

  3. 3

Check how data will reach you

If a services vendor runs the study on its own platform, ask for the audit trail, the data dictionary and the export format, and whether you keep access after the study.

  4. 4

    Ask for a split quote

Request services and software as separate lines, so you can see what each costs and swap one later. The EDC quote request template helps on the software side.

  5. 5

    Test the software yourself

Build one visit and one diary in the sandbox and take them through a consent flow on a phone before committing.

What Capture covers

Remote data capture without a vendor-run network

For a decentralized or hybrid study run by your own team, Capture provides the data side: participants enrol by QR code with no app install, consent electronically, complete diaries on a phone and sync supported wearable data, while site staff work in the eCRF.

Who should stay with a services-led model

If you do not have sites, cannot recruit locally, and need clinical staff delivering visits, a software tool alone will not solve your problem, and a services-led provider may be the right shape. The risk to manage is dependency: ask how you would get your data and audit trail out if you changed provider. For a software comparison inside the same category, read the Medable alternatives page, which covers a decentralized-trial software vendor, and Viedoc alternatives for an EDC-centred option.

If you do have sites, or a CRO that supplies them, the services layer may be paid for twice. Compare the cost of a networked service with the cost of the software plus your own staff; the self-serve vs full-service EDC page frames the same trade-off for data work, and the remote patient monitoring page covers the monitoring side.

What is Science 37?

A decentralized clinical trial company known for a Metasite model of telehealth investigators supported by a software platform. In January 2024 it agreed to be acquired by eMed. Confirm its current services with the company.

Is Science 37 an EDC?

It is not mainly an EDC. It is described as a trial-delivery model with a platform. If you need only data capture, an EDC is the closer comparison.

What are alternatives to Science 37?

For services, other decentralized trial providers and CROs; for software, EDC, ePRO and eConsent platforms such as Capture, Castor or Viedoc, depending on your needs.

Does Capture provide investigators, telehealth or home visits?

No. Capture is software. You bring the investigators and sites.

Can Capture support a decentralized trial run by my own team?

Yes, for the data side: QR-code enrolment, eConsent, ePRO, wearables via the Oura connection, eCRF and one audit trail.

How do I try it?

Use the free sandbox. Every feature is available, with no credit card and no time limit.

Is Capture suitable for Phase 3?

Yes. Capture is suitable for Phase 1 to 3.
