Clinical trial software for Basel biotech

Basel is built around two very large pharmaceutical companies and a crowd of small spin-outs who grow in their shadow. If you are one of those small sponsors, Capture gives you an EDC, ePRO and eConsent system you can build yourself, hosted in the EU, without a large-sponsor procurement process.

  • EU (Frankfurt) hosting option
  • Lean first-in-human build
  • No enterprise EDC contract

What is distinctive about Basel

  • A pharma-anchored cluster: Basel is home to the headquarters of two of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, plus a ring of biotech spin-outs, contract organisations and university groups. Small sponsors often sit next to people who know large-company standards well.
  • Two parallel reviews: in Switzerland Swissmedic and the competent cantonal ethics committee review a trial in parallel, and both approvals are needed before the study can begin. Applications to the ethics committees go through the BASEC portal.
  • Switzerland is not in the EU: the EU Clinical Trials Regulation and CTIS do not apply to Swiss-only studies, but many Basel sponsors also enroll in Germany or France, where they do.
  • Multiple languages: German, French and Italian are all official languages. Check your language needs early and confirm what Capture supports for your forms and consent in a demo.
  • Lean teams still need audit-ready data: Capture provides Part 11-aligned controls and Annex 11-aligned controls; the sponsor’s validated use is its own responsibility.

The ecosystem

Small sponsors in a large-pharma town

The Basel area around the Rhine, with the neighbouring French and German borders, is one of Europe’s densest life-science regions. The two big anchors set the tone: high expectations for data quality, a lot of experienced clinical staff who move between large and small companies, and a service ecosystem that is used to enterprise tools. For a founder with a Phase 1 asset and a team of ten, that is both an advantage and a pressure. Investors and partners expect a clean, traceable dataset from the first participant, but the company has neither the budget nor the time for the platform a large sponsor would buy.

A self-serve system meets that expectation differently. Instead of a vendor-led implementation, you upload the protocol, review an AI draft of visits and forms, add edit checks and calculated fields, and test in the sandbox with your first site. The audit trail is field-level and append-only, and the same system carries consent and patient-reported outcomes. For a founder’s perspective see clinical trial software for biotech founders, and for study-type specifics EDC for first-in-human studies and clinical trial software for early-phase trials.

Many Basel sponsors also work across borders. A trial with sites in Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg touches three legal systems, which makes a single study with site-level access, coded IDs and by-site exports a practical way to keep the data coherent while ethics and regulatory approvals remain local.

Regulatory and ethics context

Swissmedic, cantonal committees and Swiss data protection

For clinical trials of medicinal products in Switzerland, Swissmedic authorises the trial and the cantonal ethics committee responsible for the site gives its own approval. Swissmedic’s published procedure describes a parallel review, and the clinical trial ordinances were revised with effect from 1 November 2024. Exact assessment timelines and categories depend on the type of trial, so use Swissmedic’s current guidance and your regulatory lead rather than a software vendor’s summary. Capture does not hold, and does not claim, any Swiss regulatory approval.

On data protection, Switzerland has its own Federal Act on Data Protection, revised in 2023, and the EU treats Switzerland as providing adequate protection for many transfers. If you also enrol participants in the EU, GDPR applies to that processing. Study data can be hosted in Frankfurt, with encryption at rest and in transit, coded participant IDs for researchers and name visibility limited to site coordinators. Read GDPR compliant clinical trial software and hipaa vs GDPR for the underlying design, and ask your data protection adviser how Swiss and EU rules combine for your study.

For EU sites in the same programme, EU CTR and clinical trial software and clinical trial software in Germany describe the other side of the border. The EMA computerised systems guideline is useful as a checklist of data-system expectations, even where it is not directly binding.

Start-up

A lean path through Swiss and EU approvals

  1. 1

    Decide the regulatory route first

Swiss-only, or Swiss plus EU sites. That decides which authorities and which data protection rules apply.

  2. 2

    Choose hosting

EU (Frankfurt) is the common choice for studies with European sites; USA (N. Virginia) is available if US partners lead.

  3. 3

    Build in the sandbox

Draft forms from the protocol, add checks and approve the forms. Export the blank eCRF PDF for the ethics submission.

  4. 4

    Prepare consent

Build the eConsent version from the approved text; check language needs with us.

FAQ

Questions teams ask before they switch

Something not covered here? Ask us directly.

Is Capture approved by Swissmedic or a Swiss ethics committee?

No, and no such approval exists for an EDC. Swissmedic authorises the trial and the ethics committee approves the study. Capture is the data system you use within that framework.

Can I host data in the EU?

Yes. EU (Frankfurt) or USA (N. Virginia) is chosen at study setup. Check with your data protection adviser which fits your Swiss and EU participants.

Does Capture support German, French and Italian?

This page makes no claim about multi-language support. Ask in a demo what is currently available before planning multi-language forms or consent.

Do you have an office in Basel?

No. Capture is self-serve and remote, with email support and documentation.

Is it 21 CFR Part 11 compliant?

Capture provides 21 CFR Part 11-aligned controls and Annex 11-aligned controls. Compliance is shared with the sponsor’s validated use. This is not legal advice.

What does it cost?

The sandbox is free and paid plans apply once you go live. See the pricing page.
