A postpartum depression trial is timed from a delivery date, answered by new mothers on a phone between feeds, and watched closely for safety. Capture holds the delivery details, the self-report and clinician-rated scores, feeding status and adverse events in one study with one audit trail. Build it free in the sandbox, no credit card.

What a postpartum depression trial needs from its EDC
The study data
Postpartum depression studies cover several designs: drug trials with a short treatment course, psychotherapy and peer-support trials, digital programmes, and prevention studies that enrol women during pregnancy and follow them after delivery. They share one unusual feature. The index event is not a diagnosis date but a birth, so almost every window in the protocol is counted from delivery, and the baseline form has to carry the delivery date, gestational age at birth, mode of delivery and obstetric complications. Without these, eligibility (for example onset within a stated number of weeks of delivery) cannot be checked by a monitor.
The primary outcome in many registered trials is the change in a depression score. The 10-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, scored 0 to 30, is a common self-report measure, and registered protocols use cut-offs of 10 or 13 and sometimes a change of several points as a meaningful response. A 2020 individual participant data meta-analysis found the best combined accuracy near a cut-off of 11, with lower cut-offs more sensitive and higher ones more specific. The cut-off is therefore a protocol decision, and the EDC should store the total score, the individual item responses and the date, so the analysis can apply whichever threshold the statistical plan names. Clinician-rated scales such as the Hamilton or MADRS (see the Hamilton Depression Scale template) go on a site form with the rater recorded.
Instruments are other people’s work. Capture does not supply licensed wording; the study team holds the licence and files it with the study documents. Participant questionnaires can carry licence number, holder and expiry in the app, and nothing is blocked while those are missing, so the discipline of checking terms stays with your team. For the structure of a depression form, the PHQ-9 template and EDC for major depressive disorder trials show how a score, severity band and item responses sit together.
If the investigational product could pass into breast milk, regulators and ethics committees will expect feeding to be recorded. Add a short repeating form: exclusive breastfeeding, mixed, formula or none, and the date. Add a separate structured question for any infant health concern reported by the mother, with a skip-logic branch to a free-text description and the clinician’s assessment. The infant is not a participant unless your protocol says so; check with your ethics committee how infant data may be collected and consented.

| Protocol element | What the data looks like | Where it lives in Capture |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Delivery date, weeks postpartum, diagnosis method, prior episodes, current medications | Eligibility form with edit checks and skip logic |
| Self-report score | Item responses, total, date and time of completion | Participant questionnaire in built-in ePRO, opened from a link on the phone |
| Clinician-rated score | Scale, items, total, rater, interview date | Site eCRF form; rater recorded as a field |
| Randomization | Allocation, stratification (for example baseline severity) | Randomization in the same platform; blinded roles never see the arm |
| Treatment exposure | Dose, start and stop, missed doses, reason | Repeating dosing form and medication adherence capture |

Capture records the data your protocol defines. Diagnosis, severity and response are decided by clinicians and the statistical plan.

Safety reporting
Safety in this population has its own shape. Depression trials routinely monitor suicidal ideation, and many protocols use a structured scale such as the C-SSRS (the C-SSRS template shows the form structure). Self-report depression questionnaires are also commonly reviewed for an item about self-harm. Decide in the protocol who sees a flagged answer and how fast. An edit check in Capture raises a query for site review, which suits data cleaning, but a query is not a clinical alert. The urgent pathway, a phone call to the participant, belongs in the study procedures, and the EDC form should record that it happened.
For drug trials, sedation, dizziness and somnolence matter more than usual when the participant is caring for a newborn at night, and the AE form should capture onset, grade, relationship and any action on the study drug as separate answers. Keep severity, seriousness and causality as separate fields; the AE causality assessment page and the AE seriousness decision tree explain the split. Serious events follow the SAE report form, and the SAE reporting deadline calculator helps plan clocks.
Ethics committees often ask what happens when a mother stops answering. Reminders on the questionnaire help, and the compliance view shows by site who is overdue, so a coordinator can phone before the visit window closes. The reminders themselves are described under ePRO compliance and reminders.

Causality is required because the event is serious.

Delivery date, gestational age, mode of delivery and a calculated weeks-since-delivery field that drives eligibility checks.

Suicidality assessment, adverse events, repeating feeding status and infant concern with skip logic.
Run practice participants through a late questionnaire, an out-of-window visit and a serious event, approve the forms and start the paid live phase when real participants enrol.
Consent, sites and exports
Consent for a mother in the first weeks after birth has to be easy to do from a sofa. Capture’s eConsent lets the participant sign on screen after an email one-time code, and the investigator countersigns with password re-authentication; the document is fully executed only after that. See eConsent for clinical trials and eConsent without paper forms. If the protocol includes the infant in any assessment, talk to your ethics committee about the consent route before you build.
Multi-site studies use QR-code enrolment, site-level participant numbering, a site coordinator portal and by-site exports; see multi-site clinical trial management. Exports come as CSV or Excel with an automatic data dictionary, and CDISC SDTM export gives SAS XPT datasets with Define-XML (SDTM export). For the wider psychiatry picture, see EDC for psychiatry clinical trials.

Yes. The questionnaire opens from a secure link in the phone browser, with no app install.
An edit check raises a query for site review, which is a data-cleaning tool and not an emergency alert. Your protocol must set the urgent pathway, and the form can record that it was followed.
Yes. A repeating visit form can hold feeding status, and a structured question with skip logic can capture an infant concern. Check your ethics committee’s requirements for infant data.
Capture provides 21 CFR Part 11-aligned controls: a field-level audit trail, electronic signatures and role-based access. Compliance is shared with the sponsor’s own validated use of the system. This is not legal advice.
