Both are enterprise platforms sold to large sponsors and CROs. This independent page does not rank them or quote their prices. It gives you the dimensions that decide real selections, the written questions to put to both, and a lighter route if neither fits your team.

The short version
The decision
Feature comparisons of mature enterprise EDC platforms rarely produce a winner. Both cover complex visit schedules, edit checks, coding and randomisation integrations, and both publish long capability lists. Two evaluation teams reading the same lists often reach opposite conclusions, because the decisive differences are organisational: what you already run, who will build your studies, and how the commercial relationship behaves when a protocol changes.
Start with your own landscape. If your safety, clinical operations or trial management applications already come from one vendor, a platform from the same vendor can reduce integration work and consolidate support. If your landscape is mixed, ask what integration costs, not just whether an integration exists. Then look at people: the supply of experienced builders and data managers for each platform, in-house and at the CROs you prefer, affects timelines more than software capability does. Finally, look at the change model: ask how amendments are made, how long they take and how they are priced, because nearly every study is amended.
We also suggest asking about portfolio fit. Enterprise platforms are designed around large, standardised portfolios with specialist teams. If your pipeline is one or two early-phase studies, the overhead built into that model may not pay back; our enterprise EDC cost guide and build vs buy EDC guide explain the cost patterns.

Evaluation dimensions
Put the same question to both vendors. The "what good looks like" column is general guidance, not a claim about either product.
| Dimension | Question to ask in writing | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Study build | Who builds our study, and what is the typical time from final protocol to go-live? | A clear named owner and a dated plan |
| Amendments | How are mid-study amendments implemented, how long do they take and how are they priced? | Predictable turnaround and no surprise change orders |
| Integrations | Which of our current systems integrate natively, and who maintains each integration? | Named integrations with an owner |
| Validation support | What documentation do you give us to support our own validation? See GAMP 5 and EDC validation. | Specific documents, not general assurances |
| Data access | Can we get clean data exports during the study, and in what formats? | Self-service exports, standards-based where needed |
| Audit trail | How is the audit trail written, protected and exported for inspection? | Tamper-evident and exportable |
| Exit | What do we receive at contract end: data, audit trail, metadata, in what format and at what cost? | Full package, defined format, defined price |
| Support | What support is included, in which time zones and with what response times? | Written service levels |
| Commercials | What is every charge over three years: licence, build, per study, per site, change orders? | A complete scenario price |
| References | Can we speak to sponsors of our size and phase? | References similar to you, not only the largest customers |
Pricing, features and compliance status for both products are intentionally not stated here. Obtain them from the vendors, in writing.

Total cost
Licence quotes are the visible part. The larger numbers often sit in build services, integration, change orders, validation effort and the internal or CRO staff needed to run the platform. Two platforms with similar licence fees can have very different three-year costs depending on how many studies you run, how often you amend and how much of the work your own team can do.
Build a scenario: studies per year, sites per study, expected amendments per study, integrations you need. Ask both vendors to price the same scenario, including exit. Our EDC cost calculator and hidden EDC fees page list the line items to ask about. If you already use one of these platforms and are thinking about moving, see how to migrate from Medidata Rave and how to switch EDC vendors mid-study.
Where Capture fits
Capture is not a lookalike of either platform and does not claim to replace one in every enterprise portfolio. It is a self-serve, all-in-one platform for teams that want to build and run studies themselves: EDC, eCRF builder, ePRO, eConsent, randomization and safety workflows in one system with one audit trail. It is suitable for Phase 1, 2 and 3.

Medidata has been part of Dassault Systèmes since 2019.
This page does not state pricing for either product. Enterprise pricing is quoted per scenario; ask both vendors to price the same multi-year portfolio, including build, change orders and exit.
We make no compliance claims for either product. Compliance depends on the system's controls plus how it is configured, validated and used. Ask each vendor what documentation supports your validation.
Self-serve platforms such as Capture suit early-stage biotechs, academic sponsors and small CROs that want to build studies themselves. Capture has a free sandbox with every feature.
Yes. The sandbox needs no credit card and no sales call, and you can build your own protocol while the enterprise vendors respond.
Yes. Capture is suitable for Phase 1, 2 and 3 studies.
No. Oracle, Clinical One, Medidata and Rave are trademarks of their respective owners. This is an independent evaluation guide written by Capture.Study, a competing vendor, so weigh it accordingly and verify claims with each vendor.
