RTSM, also called IRT, covers randomization and the supply of investigational product. This page compares the questions that separate vendors, and explains where randomization built into an EDC can be enough, and where it cannot replace an IRT.

The short version
Scope
Studies with open-label, single-site or simple allocation needs sometimes need nothing more than a validated randomization list inside the data capture system. Studies with multiple arms, stratification, adaptive rules, titration, kit assignment, depot shipments or expiry management need a purpose-built IRT, and the configuration effort and vendor responsiveness during amendments matter more than any feature list.
Suvoda and Signant take different commercial routes. Suvoda markets itself as a specialist in complex randomization and supply. Signant markets a broader platform that bundles RTSM with other participant-facing and data modules, which can suit sponsors who want fewer vendors, and means the RTSM sits inside a larger contract. Both framings come from vendor material; test them against your protocol.
Existing Capture pages explain the landscape: RTSM software for clinical trials, clinical trial randomization software, randomization software for small studies, and single-vendor pages Capture vs Suvoda and Capture vs Signant Health.
Evaluation
These are verification questions, not claims about either vendor.
| Topic | Question to ask | Where Capture fits |
|---|---|---|
| Randomization design | Does it support our scheme (blocks, stratification, minimisation, adaptive rules)? | Capture has configurable randomization; confirm your exact scheme in the sandbox before relying on it. |
| Supply management | Does it manage depots, kits, expiry, resupply and returns? | Capture is not a supply management system. If you need this, use an RTSM vendor. |
| Blinding | How are unblinding events, emergency unblinding and blinded roles handled? | Blinded roles do not receive treatment-arm values in the EDC; check what your protocol needs from a dedicated IRT. |
| EDC link | How does allocation reach the EDC, and who reconciles? | Allocation sits in the same platform and audit trail as the EDC, so there is nothing to reconcile. |
| Amendments | How long does a change to the randomization or supply set-up take, and is it billed? | Ask each vendor; test any change in the Capture sandbox. |
| Validation | What validation package do we receive, and what is our UAT responsibility? | Documentation to support sponsor validation for Enterprise customers. |
| Support | Is there 24-hour support for site users during dosing visits? | Email support, typically under 24 hours; ask RTSM vendors about out-of-hours cover. |
| Total cost | What are all charges: set-up, per-study, per-site, per-shipment, amendments? | Ask each vendor in writing. The Capture pricing page lists current terms. |
Do not use Capture randomization as a substitute for supply management. Vendor columns are deliberately blank: ask Suvoda and Signant directly.
If your design is straightforward, configure randomization in the free sandbox next to your EDC forms and see whether it meets your protocol. No card, no time limit.
Hands-on test
Whichever vendor you test, walk one participant from consent to allocation: eligibility confirmed, stratum recorded, allocation logged and visible to the right roles only. This is a demo-data example of how the allocation step sits in a Capture study. It illustrates the EDC link, not a supply workflow.

Decision aid
Shortlist dedicated RTSM vendors such as Suvoda and Signant and ask for design-specific references.
You need supply management; do not rely on EDC randomization alone.
Ask Signant how its modules are contracted and reconciled.
Test whether EDC-native randomization meets your protocol, including in Capture.
Ask each vendor how fast a change goes live and what it costs.
Process
Arms, ratios, strata, blinding, kits, depots, resupply triggers and who may unblind.
If yes, EDC-native randomization alone is not enough.
Ask for configuration time, amendment process and a reference with a similar design.
Run a test participant through allocation and confirm the data arrives and reconciles.
The terms are used interchangeably for systems that manage randomization and, usually, trial supply management. IWRS and IVRS are older names tied to web or phone access.
Neither wins in general. Suvoda markets specialist RTSM for complex studies; Signant markets RTSM within a wider platform. Test both against your randomization and supply specification.
We do not quote either vendor's pricing because it is not published in a form we can verify. Ask both for a written quote on the same scenario.
Not in general. Capture has configurable randomization in the same platform as its EDC, with allocation logged, but it does not claim supply management. If your protocol needs kit, depot or resupply logic, use an RTSM vendor, and verify any design-specific need in the sandbox.
For simpler designs with no drug supply logic, where the aim is a logged allocation tied to the participant record. Confirm your exact scheme before relying on it.
Yes. Capture supports Phase 1 through Phase 3. For Phase 3 studies with complex supply, pair it with an RTSM vendor chosen against your specification.
Write one randomization and supply specification, send it to every vendor, and compare configuration time, amendment process, validation package and 24-month cost.
