Set up randomization
Switch on the Randomization module, then open Settings > Randomization. Choose the method, add the treatment arms with their ratios, set stratification and when randomization happens, and click Save Configuration. Then generate or load the randomization list.
Where to find it
Settings > Randomization
Before you start
- The Randomization module is switched on (switch modules on or off).
- You can manage study settings, or you hold an unblinded role. Block sizes and the list itself are visible to unblinded roles only.
Configure randomization
Open Settings > Randomization.
Choose the Method: Permuted blocks (optionally stratified), Simple or Minimization (Pocock-Simon).
Choose the Randomization Trigger: after enrollment, after screening is complete, or manual only (the investigator decides).
Under Treatment Arms, click Add Treatment Arm for each arm: name, code, ratio, whether it is control or placebo, and dose and route.
Set stratification factors if needed: each factor takes its value from a question answered before randomization.
Choose whether the randomization number equals the screening number or follows its own format.
Set the supply strategy and any randomization caps (study, country or site), then click Save Configuration.
Cohorts, coded labels and the list
- Randomization List Generator: create the list in Capture, or load your own kit inventory (load the kit list).
- Cohorts: randomize in groups; exactly one cohort must be open when someone is randomized.
- Coded arm labels: show arms in exports as "Group A", "Group B" until the code key is released (unblinded exports).
- Export Restriction: only the Unblinded Administrator can restrict all exports to unblinded roles.
- The blinding level (open label, single blind or double blind) is set in Settings > General > Blinding (what blinding hides).
Questions
Which randomization method should I choose?
Permuted blocks keep arms balanced over time and are the most common choice; stratify them by factors such as site or disease severity. Minimization balances several factors in small studies. Read more about randomization or try the randomization list generator.
