Send survey reminders by text message

Ask participants to opt in with the SMS block on the consent form (or an SMS opt-in question), then switch on Text message reminders in Settings > Notifications > SMS templates. Texts follow the same timing and quiet hours as reminder emails, and participants can reply STOP at any time.

Where to find it

Settings > Notifications > SMS templates

Before you start

  • You can manage study settings: Study Owner, Study Manager or Administrator.
  • The card shows Text service connected. If it shows Not connected, texts are not available for your study yet: contact support.

Ask participants to opt in

  1. Open the consent form's Settings tab and go to Text message reminders.

  2. Switch on Show the SMS opt-in block and choose the wording version marked default.

Participants then choose Email only or Email and text message, enter their mobile number and tick the agreement.

  3. Approve the consent form version as usual.

Site staff can also record a participant's agreement on the Portal Access card with Participant agreed to receive text message reminders. Texts go only to participants who agreed and whose number includes the country code.

Switch texts on

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > SMS templates > Text message reminders.

  2. Switch on the steps you want. By default, "survey ready" and "last chance" are on.

  3. Keep the built-in wording or write your own. The card shows the character count.

  4. Use Send a test text to your own phone to check it, then save.

STOP and START replies

A participant who replies STOP gets no more texts, for any study that uses their number. The Portal Access card then shows "Texts: replied STOP". They can turn texts back on by replying START, or with the switch in their portal settings (stop text messages).
